OUR CLIENT
The CTVHCS’ Olin E. Teague Veterans Medical Center conducts research on more than 115 projects to discover knowledge, develop VA scientists and health care leaders, and create innovations that advance health care for Veterans and the nation.
The center collaborates with the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine and its primary affiliate, the Scott and White Health Care System. This $11.5 million VA research institute attracts world-class researchers to central Texas.
The Olin E. Teague Veterans Medical Center has a close relationship with the Army base at Fort Hood, which has the largest troop commitment to Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND). Located only 25 miles from Fort Hood, researchers at our Temple medical center collaborate with Fort Hood physicians in offering transitional medical services for service members and Veterans. They also conduct research on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI), which are common conditions from those conflicts.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:{LOCAL & TRAVEL}
The Medical Laboratory Technician/Clinical Laboratory Technician (MLT/CLT), under the direction of the Chief Technologist, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) shall perform various clinical laboratory testing procedures in the General Clinical Laboratory in accordance with VA policies and procedures and the regulations of the medical staff bylaws of CTVHCS. Responsibilities and duties will include but are not limited to:

• Use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results
• Perform, evaluate, interpret, correlate, and validate the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results.
• Monitor quality control systems and measures.
• Utilize basic knowledge of laboratory equipment and be able to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation
• May need to resolve problems encountered in the laboratory.
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Perform a broad range of laboratory procedures, including advanced and complex laboratory procedures. Must be able to recognize deviation from expected results and use scientific principles to analyze and correct problems.
• Evaluate and solve problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis accounting for physiologic processes and requirements.
• Maintain and document the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment. Use, calibrate, and identify malfunctions; repair and perform preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment.
• Troubleshoot issues with laboratory instruments and resolve problems. Diagnose deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction.
• Perform and document quality control and quality assurance activities and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles and theories of performance improvement.
• Identify discrepancies, solve problems, and present solutions.
• Answer inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors which influence test results. Interpret results and suggest follow up test selection or procedures.
• Must meet all acceptable quality and productivity standards as defined by Chief, P&LMS or designee.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Associate of Applied Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Clinical Laboratory Science or other Biological Science.
• Two (2) years of laboratory experience.
• Certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician/Clinical Laboratory Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT) or National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA)
• ACLS and BLS certifications approved by the American Heart Association (AHA)
• Experience on the following analyzers is preferred:
• Sysmex XN3100 Hematology Analyzer & Slide Maker Stainer
• Sysmex Cellavision Digital Imaging
• Diagnostica STA R Max Coagulation Analyzer
• Beckman Iris Velocity & IQ Select Urinalysis Analyzer
• Beckman Coulter AU5800 Chemistry Analyzer
• Beckman Coulter DxI800 Immunoassay Analyzer
• Beckman Coulter Power Express Automation Line
• Osmometer
• Comprehensive knowledge of professional Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Laboratory Technician principles, practices, concepts, and theories providing for sound independent work.
• Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory quality control, quality assurance procedures, and principles of performance improvement providing for sound independent work.
• Requires a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision.
• Requires the ability to interpret and apply complex written instructions.
• Must be able to communicate, consult, and interact with other members of the healthcare team, external relations, customer service, and patient education
• Must be available for 40 hours per week to include rotating weekends and Federal holidays with flexible eight (8), ten (10) or twelve (12) hour tours and 1 week notice of schedule change
• Ability to speak, understand, read, and write English fluently.
• Able to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
